Designed around you.Ride beyond the ordinary.
South Africa offers some of the most rewarding cycling experiences in the world. From quiet mountain passes and worldclass gravel routes to flowing single trails and spectacular coastal roads, there's something for every type of rider. Some cyclists come to train. Others simply want to explore the landscape at their own pace.
South Africa
Why explore the roads less travelled?
South Africa offers an incredible variety of cycling experiences within one journey. Around Stellenbosch, quiet country roads, mountain passes and world-class trail networks make it a destination for both road cyclists and mountain bikers.
Just a short drive away, Chapman's Peak Drive offers one of the world's most scenic coastal rides, while the vast landscapes of the Karoo provide endless gravel roads for those looking to explore beyond the beaten track.
Cycling allows you to experience the country at a different pace. You notice the changing landscapes, stop at places you would otherwise drive past and discover regions in a way that simply isn't possible from behind the wheel.
Whether you're planning a dedicated cycling holiday or adding a few rides to a broader South Africa itinerary, every journey can be tailored to your riding style, experience and goals.
Planning guide
Your planning guide
Do I bring my own bike or rent one?
Both work. Rental quality at the Cape is genuinely high and saves you the airline fee and the anxiety; riders training for something specific usually bring their own. I arrange either.
Is it safe to ride there?
With good planning, cycling in South Africa can be a fantastic experience. Choosing suitable routes, riding at the right times of day and making use of local knowledge all contribute to a safe and enjoyable ride. For some routes, guided rides or support vehicles may also be worth considering.
What level of fitness do I need?
Anything from a comfortable sixty kilometres to a race-season training block. Daily distance, climbing and rest days are set to your level, not the other way round.
Which months are best?
March to May and September to November. Midsummer is rideable but means very early starts, and the south-easter blows hard in December and January.
Can a non-cycling partner come along?
That is one of the more common requests. While you ride, they get their own day – an estate, a coastline, a town – and you meet again for dinner.
Can I combine cycling with other experiences?
Absolutely. Many cyclists combine a few days in the Winelands with Cape Town, a safari or a relaxing stay along the coast. Cycling often becomes just one part of a much broader South Africa journey.
Personal
A personal note
One of the things I enjoy most about cycling in South Africa is the variety. A morning ride through the backcountry can be followed by lunch on a wine estate, while the next day might lead you onto quiet gravel roads or along one of the world's most scenic coastal routes.
For me, cycling isn't only about the ride itself. It's one of the best ways to experience the landscape, meet local people and discover places you might otherwise never find.
