I start by understanding what you want to be left alone for, and what you want to be present for. That is the only way to make sure the property, the staff and the itinerary all work together.

What does exclusive use actually cost?

Less than expected in low season and considerably more over Christmas. A six-room lodge for a family of eight often works out close to the per-person rate of a good conventional lodge.

Are private charters worth it?

Between Cape Town and the Kruger area with more than four people, frequently yes – it turns most of a day into an hour and lands you at the airstrip rather than an airport.

Can you get us into the fully booked places?

Sometimes. Cancellations and held allocations do turn up, and my partners call me first. I will never promise something I cannot deliver.

How much privacy is realistic?

Complete, at the right properties. That is precisely what I am selecting for.

Does this suit a milestone celebration?

Very well. Significant birthdays and anniversaries are much of what I plan at this level, and an exclusive-use house is the easiest way to host thirty people without hiring a venue.

At this level the difference is rarely the property. It is whether the people around you can read a room – when to appear with something and when to leave you entirely alone.

That is not something a brochure can tell you, and it is the main reason the list of houses I recommend stays deliberately short.
